Optimum features good speeds but poor customer satisfaction scores

Optimum is a major national cable internet provider. Most of Optimum’s 4.4 million subscribers receive cable internet service [7]. But the ISP is also adding some all-fiber connections in select markets--most prominently in the Northeast [8]. Optimum is the internet brand name of Altice USA, which rebranded the company formerly called Suddenlink into the Optimum brand in 2022 [1]. Altice/Optimum is the 6th-largest ISP in the nation [2]. Optimum seems to check off all the right boxes for many of its offerings. You will have no data caps and no required contracts with Optimum internet plans. You will also get free equipment rental included with your monthly plan price. And Optimum’s prices are good (at least while the promotions last). So why are Optimum’s national customer satisfaction scores so low? We’ll check into that as we give you an overview of what to expect from an Optimum internet connection.

PROS

Gigabit download speeds No data caps or contracts 5-year price lock on select plans

Cons

Poor customer satisfaction scores Slower upload speeds for cable than all-fiber Price hikes after promo rates

Hughesnet delivers solid satellite internet, but performance lags behind the competition

Hughesnet is the largest of three major satellite internet providers in the United States [1]. The other two are Viasat and Starlink. Satellite internet service is known for its coast-to-coast coverage and wide availability. For decades, people have relied on satellite internet as a necessity in rural areas without wired internet. You can get Hughesnet in most households in the United States and in many locations in South America. All you need to get coverage is an unobstructed view of the southern sky. Satellite internet does offer slower speeds than most other internet technologies. You’ll also have to deal with a monthly data allowance that may restrict how much HD streaming or large file transfer you can do. And satellite internet service is more expensive than cable or fiber internet. Hughesnet initially seems to offer lower prices than its main rival, Viasat. But a closer look reveals that Viasat prices are better, based on the performance you’re getting per dollar. Hughesnet speeds only go to 100 Mbps download, while Viasat’s speeds go up to 150 Mbps. In addition, Viasat offers unlimited high-speed data, while Hughesnet has soft data caps. Hughesnet has also had issues with low customer satisfaction ratings in national surveys, so overall, we recommend Viasat instead for satellite internet. But let’s break it down and see why.

PROS

Satellite internet provides coverage in hard-to-reach areas Can be more resilient to disasters than wired internet HughesNet Fusion claims to offer lower latency with hybrid technology

Cons

Soft data caps may increase monthly pricing and affect performance Much slower speeds than cable or fiber Two-year contracts and higher prices than cable or fiber

Optimum Pricing

3.0

Good initial prices followed by price hikes

Cable internet is the chief type of connection that Optimum provides its customers. Because of improvements to cable internet technology, you can get gigabit download speeds from many cable internet companies like Optimum. You just won’t get the same upload speeds from cable as you will from an all-fiber connection [3]. Whether you get the usual cable service or all-fiber, you will get good prices from Optimum, and, on select plans, those prices will be locked for 5 years (as of January 2026) [9]. Here’s an example. You’ll pay $40/month for Optimum’s first-tier plan, which is up to 300. That is a good price for these speeds. The catch is that after the promotional period ends, standard prices will apply, which will increase your bill. That may be why Optimum is seeing year-over-year declines in its cable customers [4]. The price hikes may be pushing people to other options at the end of their promotional period.

HughesNet Pricing

4.0

Hughesnet offers prices similar to Viasat, but often for slower speeds

Hughesnet offers its plans at rates that at first seem comparable to cable or fiber prices. The Hughesnet first-tier satellite internet plan starts at $39.99/month. But there are two catches. First, your initial rate is a promotional rate, and after the first six months, your prices will increase significantly for all plans. Second, you may only get an internet speed up to 50 Mbps download/5 Mbps upload, depending on your service area. This is not high-speed internet by the FCC’s definition [2]. And it is clearly not as fast as the 200-300 Mbps download speed you often get for $50-60/month from a cable or fiber internet plan.

Hughesnet uses soft data caps that may affect your internet speed

A drawback to Hughesnet plans is the use of soft data caps. When you order Hughesnet service, you don’t choose a speed level as you do with other internet types. Instead, you choose your data limit for the month, ranging from 100 GB to 200 GB. If you only surf the internet lightly and use email, you can stay within a 100 GB data limit pretty easily. But if you plan large file uploads, video streaming, or online gaming, the data usage can add up fast. Hughesnet does offer some solutions to help you work with their soft data caps. Their data tokens allow you to purchase extra data at the end of each month if you need more. Nonetheless, having soft data caps will affect how you use the internet. If you consistently need more data tokens, those extra charges may affect your monthly budget. Consider carefully whether you are likely to need more or less data than Hughesnet will allow you under each of their plans. Finally, Hughesnet requires a two-year contract. If you cancel your subscription early, you will pay an early termination fee prorated by the time still left in your contract.

Optimum Reliability and Performance

4.0

Cable and fiber both provide fast download speeds, but cable's upload speeds are slower

With hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) technology, Optimum gives its cable customers gigabit download speeds but much slower upload speeds. That’s typical for cable internet service. Optimum is comparable to other major cable internet providers such as Spectrum and Xfinity, offering upload speeds at a maximum of around 35-50 Mbps. Optimum differs from the cable internet competition because it is also launching into the all-fiber internet market. As of November 2025, Optimum has over 3 million fiber passings and continues to expand [10]. Fiber internet’s most striking advantage over cable internet is its symmetrical upload and download speeds. This is a game-changer for online gaming, videoconferencing, and large homes with multiple devices. When Altice merged Suddenlink into the Optimum brand, the company had two distinct “footprints” from where the former Optimum and Suddenlink coverage had existed. Suddenlink’s coverage area had been primarily in the South and West. Optimum was strong in the Northeast, and particularly in the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Now, the fiber buildout is fastest in that tristate area [1]. Your chances of getting fiber internet from Optimum is better if you live in the tri-state area.

HughesNet Reliability and Performance

3.0

A Hughesnet internet connection is slower than most other ISPs

The nature of satellite internet technology means that satellite internet has always been different from wired internet in three ways. 1) Slower speeds: Hughesnet’s maximum download speed right now (100 Mbps) is much slower than speeds for fiber and cable internet that can often reach Gigabit speeds (1000 Mbps and up). 2) Weather interference: Bad weather can sometimes cause temporary slowing or outage in a satellite signal. 3) Latency: The distance of a satellite from Earth causes latency, which is a slight delay in data transmission. Despite these drawbacks, satellite service can still give you a solid connection if you live in a rural or underserved area. In today’s digital world, high-speed internet may be your ticket to education, a job, and even medical care. Satellite internet can support high enough speeds to provide you with access to these opportunities. Hughesnet has attempted to address latency with their new Hughesnet Fusion plans, which launched in 2022. This hybrid technology uses a satellite connection but can also route signals through wireless towers when necessary. Hughesnet has not released data to prove lower latency yet. They claim that the latency is 100 ms on their FCC Broadband label. Customers online report higher latency for their Fusion service [3].

Optimum Equipment, Installation and Bonus Features

4.0

No equipment rental fees, free installation with Optimum plans

Optimum will provide you with a WiFi 6E gateway as a part of your monthly plan fee, with no extra rental charge [9]. If you would rather use your own modem and router, Optimum will allow it. Just be sure to check for compatibility with their specs. Standard installation is free with most Optimum plans.

HughesNet Equipment, Installation and Bonus Features

Hughesnet equipment requires initial investment or monthly rental fee

Buying satellite equipment can be expensive. The dish and gateway for Hughesnet Gen 5 plans costs around $350, while Hughesnet Fusion equipment is $450. If you don’t want to invest and would rather try out service first, you can rent the equipment for $15-20 a month. Buying the equipment outright will save you money if you end up using your service for more than 2 years. Hughesnet’s installation is often free, depending on your plan and current promotions. This is a nice bonus and ensures that a technician can get the best angle for your satellite dish. The technician will connect two of your devices in addition to setting up the antenna and modem/router.

Optimum Experience & Support

Optimum customer satisfaction: the big question mark

With so many seemingly good points to its service and pricing, why has Optimum’s customer satisfaction scored significantly below average according to J.D. Power? [6] A sampling of online user reviews suggests two major complaints. The first is outages and failure of technical response. The second is a more general dissatisfaction with the phone system: being transferred to different departments and receiving contradictory responses from different phone reps when trying to resolve billing issues. Because this is a fairly even distribution of complaints, it’s likely that Optimum is not responding quickly enough to customer concerns, whether they are technical or billing-related. We can’t know the reason for this dysfunction. Often, these kinds of responsiveness issues happen when companies are understaffed or have high staff turnover in their customer service. But until Optimum improves its ratings, we have to give it only 3 stars for customer satisfaction.

HughesNet Experience & Support

3.0

Hughesnet customer satisfaction below average

Hughesnet has sometimes received low customer satisfaction ratings both in national surveys and in online reviews. It’s hard to know how much of that response is related to unrealistic customer expectations about satellite internet performance. Certainly, when Hughesnet gets online comments from unsatisfied customers, they tend to focus on internet performance. Meanwhile, remember that while satellite internet service has limitations, it can still provide high-speed internet access when your only alternative is slower DSL or no internet at all.

Optimum is the worst company, period to use. When you decide to cancel this company's service, they will bust your butt to make it extremely difficult to do so. Once you believe you have the service canceled, during a conversation with a foreign person who hardly speaks English, they continue to attempt to steal money right out of your CREDIT CARD ACCOUNT. Today, I find they have charged my credit card $80.00, this month (March 24th, 2026) and I totally/completely cancelled their service on February 6th 2026. Very shortly, after my canceling their service, they attempted to charge me for the 'modem', which I 100% PURCHED at the on-set of their service! They couldn't make that 'stick' so they went on to trying to charge me the monthly service of $80.00, which the had just raised from $50.00! I'm not at the same address, and not even in the same State, at this time! A friend of mine, Heaven forbid, set-up for their service at my old address. At that time neither myself nor she had any Idea of how crooked this out-fit was! They offered her a very good rate to begin with, but I hope it works for her, when she decides to get 'out'! Their 'foreigner' rep. assured me all was finished between Optimum and me as of that Feb. 6th 2026 date. I 'pushed' him to say that statement three times, while on the phone and thought we were finished! If you want to spend hours on the phone with who knows how many customer service representatives who CAN'T speak English, go with Optimum. I you read another review, above, you'll find this guy was/is still fighting with them a year after he canceled their service. I and I'm positive every other customer of Optimum will warn you, DO NOT BECOME INVOLVED WITH THIS INTERNET/PHONE SERVICE! I guarantee you every word of this review is TRUE! PAY HEED!!! DO YOURSELF AND THOSE YOU KNOW A FAVOR, STAY AWAY FROM THIS BUNCH OF CROOKS!!!!!!!!!

We are stuck and have not other choice basically. The ATT service in our area is not reliable per neighbor's advice and other options are not available. So I feel as if Optimum is taking advantage of our situation. They continue to " allure" us with this fibernet with the promotion attached, but have yet that provided. Need them,, but wished for better pricing due to the situation.

Internet runs great. The charges per month is high and I believe should not be over 130 for just having internet. Customer service is terrible. I had an issue because I was charged twice. Without asking me they applied a credit to my account. I request a refund and was told it could take up to 7 business days. It's been 7 business days and still have not gotten my money back. I reached back out and was now told 10-14 days. It didn't take days to take the money out of my account so it should not be taking this long to put my funds back. I am frustrated and this is trull unsettling. Will not continue with this internet service when i move.

Forget saying that Optimum is the worst internet company to use. Optimum is the worst company, period to use. If you want a company to refuse to cancel service and steal money right out of your account, and then send you over to collections, go with Optimum. If you want to spend hours on the phone with who knows how many customer service representatives who can’t speak English, go with Optimum. If you want to finally get your case escalated to executive customer relations a year after you canceled service, and have executive customer relations give you the middle finger, go with Optimum. Or, you could save yourself all the time, trouble, and aneurysms and just not use Optimum.

Hughes.net very unreliable. I am so disgusted with their customer service, and the lack of quality on their Satellite Internet. I have complained since day one about numerous issues with it not working, especially on good days, and they just don't care. They won't let you out of the contract without paying $400 in fees, and they expect you to keep putting money into their service to "make it better" in their words. They also want to charge you $150 in service fees if you don't take their monthly insurance, which also costs money. I am extremely low income, and absolutely disgusted with their lack of empathy for my situation. When I signed up for their service I had no idea how awful it would be, and it was my only option as far as where I am located, as to what I could afford in this rural are. I would never have signed up with them had I knoown how truly unreliable and terrible they are.

Liars and Thieves We were told we would have UNLIMITED DATA with LiGHTNING SPEEDS What we got was LIMITED and THROTTLED with 19 days left in the billing cycle then they offered to sell us “ TOKENS “ so we could continue to use our service. We’re paying $135.00 a month ( the highest plan available ) and we cant even watch tv. Now it will cost us $400.00 to get out of the contract and we are only One month in. I have had internet providers in many different locations over the past 20 yrs and never have I paid so much and gotten so little. Liars and thieves. That is what you deal with when you deal with Hughes net. Would I reckomend Hughsnet ? ABSOLUTELY NOT !
