Optimum Business Staff Review

3.3
If you run a small or mid-sized business in the Northeast or parts of the South and Midwest, Optimum Business Internet is a contender for internet service. Operated by Optimum Communications, Inc. (formerly Altice USA), Optimum Business delivers cable and fiber internet service across 21 states, with its strongest footprint in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Texas. The company has been working hard to rebuild its reputation and has made real product-level progress. However, customer experience still lags behind the best-in-class competitors. As of Q1 2026, Optimum serves 340,000 small and medium-sized business internet customers. The fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) network by Optimum now passes over 3.15 million locations. The growth in its fiber network is substantial: 53% of its residential broadband base now subscribes to 1 Gig or higher speeds, up from 38% a year earlier. That shift toward faster tiers reflects strong network investment. All Optimum plans come with built-in security, no data caps, and no annual contract, a combination that's uncommon among major cable carriers. Optimum also backs new business customers with a 60-day money-back guarantee and will pay up to $1,500 to buy out a previous provider's early termination fee. That said, Optimum Business carries real limitations. Upload speeds on cable average around 34 Mbps, which is a bottleneck for cloud-heavy operations. Customer satisfaction scores trail top-rated providers. And in Q2 2026, the company reported a net loss of 4,300 SMB broadband customers, a sign that the competitive environment remains tough.

Pricing

Optimum Business Internet pricing starts at $65 per month for 500 Mbps cable service and climbs to $135 per month for the 1 Gig plan (which includes connection backup and premier tech support). Fiber plans with multi-gigabit speeds are available in select markets and priced separately. Prices vary by location, so call 1-844-420-7641 to check what is available at your exact address.

No Annual Contract

Optimum Business plans are month-to-month, which is awesome for startups and growing businesses. However, some promotional pricing requires you to maintain the plan through the introductory period to keep the advertised rate, so make sure you read the fine print before signing up.

Contract Buyout Up to $1,500

If you're currently locked into a contract with another provider, Optimum Business will reimburse your early termination fee up to $1,500. Submit your final bill from your previous provider that shows the termination fee, and allow 6 to 8 weeks for processing. The offer applies to internet, phone, or video service contracts for qualifying new business customers.

Watch Out for Fees and Post-Promo Price Increases

The advertised prices require enrollment in both auto-pay and paperless billing. If you choose not to enroll in either, your monthly rate goes up $5. There's also a $3.50-per-month network access surcharge that doesn't appear in the headline price. Equipment rental is $9.99 per month unless you qualify for a higher-tier plan that includes the modem. Promotional pricing is time-limited. On the 500 Mbps plan, the promo rate holds for 24 months; on the 1 Gig plan, for 36 months. After the promo period, the rate can step up until it reaches the standard rate. When you call to sign up, ask your representative to confirm exactly when your promo period ends and what your post-promo rate will be before you commit.

Reliability and Performance

3.5
Optimum Business promises 99.9% network reliability on its Secure Internet plans. The company pledges same-day service response for any issue, including on-site technician dispatch when needed. Those guarantees are meaningful on paper. Execution is where the reviews diverge (see Customer Experience below).

Cable Dominates, But Fiber is Growing

As of Q2 2026, Optimum’s fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) network passes over 3.15 million locations, and 23,700 SMB customers now receive service over that network, a figure that grew by roughly 1,300 new business fiber customers in Q2 alone. Approximately 97% of Optimum’s total footprint now has access to 1 Gig or higher speeds. That said, the vast majority of Optimum Business customers still connect over cable infrastructure. The cable network runs fiber from Optimum's facilities to neighborhood nodes, then carries data the rest of the way via coaxial cable. This hybrid technology delivers strong download speeds, but limits upload speed. On the cable network, average upload speeds run around 34 Mbps regardless of which download plan you select. That's workable for email and light cloud use, but a real constraint for businesses that rely on cloud backups, video production, or high-volume file transfers. Optimum has also begun rolling out multi-gig cable, with download speeds up to 2 Gbps now available in parts of its West Virginia markets. Where Optimum has deployed true fiber-to-the-premises service, the picture changes entirely. Fiber customers get symmetrical speeds up to 8 Gbps in select markets, primarily in the New York tri-state area and select Texas markets. If fiber is available at your address, it’s the right choice for almost any business use case.

Shared Bandwidth and Peak-Hour Performance

Optimum Business cable plans run on a shared network. Your connection shares capacity with nearby subscribers on the same local node, unlike a dedicated fiber circuit, where your bandwidth is exclusively yours. In most suburban and urban areas, this causes no noticeable slowdowns. But businesses in very dense commercial districts have occasionally reported dips during peak morning hours. Fiber plans eliminate this concern.

Business Connection Backup

For businesses where going offline for even 30 minutes costs money (retail stores, medical offices, restaurants that take online orders), Business Connection Backup is worth adding. Launched in November 2024, it automatically switches business-critical devices to cellular backup when your primary internet goes down. It pulls from multiple cellular carriers simultaneously and selects the strongest available signal. A built-in battery keeps the device running for up to 8 hours during power outages, so simultaneous internet and power failures won't take you offline.

Same-Day Service Commitment

Optimum Business pledges to start working on any reported service issue the same day, including dispatching a technician to your location if needed. That's a stronger commitment than most residential ISPs make to business customers. However, real-world response times don’t consistently match that promise, but the guarantee is on record. Ask your representative to confirm the terms in writing for your specific plan.

Equipment, Installation and Bonus Features

3.5
Optimum Business provides a business-grade gateway modem with your subscription. Equipment is included at no extra charge with the 1 Gig Secure Internet plan. On lower-tier plans, you'll pay a $9.99-per-month modem rental fee unless you use a compatible device you own. The gateway supports business WiFi and access to Optimum's hotspot network for you and your employees. For businesses that need WiFi coverage across larger spaces, Optimum Business's Pro WiFi service deploys a fully managed mesh wireless network on top of your internet plan. Optimum handles all hardware (controllers, switches, and access points), firmware updates, break-fix management, and 24/7 network monitoring through its Network Management Center. A customer portal lets you file trouble tickets, request changes, and check system status without touching the hardware. If your business relocates, Optimum terminates service at the old address without a penalty and restarts the contract at the new address. Optimum Business sends a professional technician to your location for installation and activates service on-site. You don't have to self-install or troubleshoot setup. Professional installation fees apply for most new customers, though the fiber plan promotion currently waives this charge — confirm at the time of signup. Lead times vary based on your location and the complexity of the setup. If your building needs new cabling or significant network construction, ask upfront what's involved and plan for a longer lead time.

Bonus Features Included with Every Plan

  • All Optimum Business plans have unlimited data.
  • Network-level cybersecurity protection filters out malware, phishing attempts, and ransomware. Optimum expanded its SMB cybersecurity offerings in May 2025 with Secure Internet Plus, which adds a deeper layer of threat protection for business networks.
  • Contract buyout up to $1,500. Optimum reimburses early termination fees from your previous internet, phone, or video provider for qualifying new business customers.
  • Optimum Business Account Center is an online management portal for managing users, configuring services, reviewing bills, and running diagnostics.
  • Business customers and their employees can connect to Optimum's hotspot network at no additional charge.
  • Optimum pledges to begin resolving any service issue the same day it's reported, including same-day technician dispatch when required.

Customer Experience & Support

2.5
This is the section that gives prospective customers the most pause. Optimum Business markets 24/7 customer support and a same-day service guarantee. The infrastructure for that support exists. But independent review platforms tell a more complicated story. Customer satisfaction scores for Optimum rank below the industry average across multiple review sites, and the pattern of complaints is consistent enough to deserve attention. The most common issues cited across Trustpilot, Consumer Affairs, and the Better Business Bureau include billing errors and unexpected charges, difficulty reaching support agents with authority to resolve account-level issues, long hold times, and service disruptions that persist through multiple technician visits without resolution. The company’s own Q2 2026 earnings results reflect this dynamic: SMB broadband customer relationships declined by 4,300 in the quarter, part of 40,000 total broadband net losses and continuing a multi-year trend of subscriber losses. There are bright spots. Customers who have smooth installations and no billing complications frequently report satisfaction with the connection itself, particularly fiber customers who note fast, consistent speeds. The mobile bundling push is working: Optimum Mobile added roughly 50,000 lines in Q2 2026, its best second-quarter result to date, bringing its total to 724,000 lines. And the Optimum Business Account Center and mobile app give customers reasonable self-service options for routine management. Optimum Business's product has improved faster than its service reputation. If you sign up, protect yourself by documenting your plan terms and pricing at signup, setting up auto-pay from day one, and using the online portal for routine management.
