These three numbers tell different stories about the constellation. The “total launched" figure includes every Starlink satellite SpaceX has ever put on a rocket, going back to the first batch in 2019, including prototypes, first-generation units, and satellites that failed or were intentionally deorbited are all counted here. That’s why “total launched” is always the largest of the three numbers.
“In orbit" narrows that down to satellites still physically circling Earth. It excludes the roughly 1,700-plus satellites that have already reentered the atmosphere, either because they reached the end of their service life or were removed for safety reasons.
“Actively operating," sometimes shortened to Starlink working satellites, is the smallest and most useful number. To count as operational, a satellite has to be in its assigned orbital position and functioning normally. The gap between “in orbit" and “working" is usually made up of recently launched satellites still raising their altitude toward their operational shell, plus a handful of malfunctioning units awaiting reentry.
The most recent SpaceX satellite launch ahead of July 29 lifted off on July 25, 2026, from Space Launch Complex 4E at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The Falcon 9 flight, designated Starlink 17-51, deployed 24 Starlink V2 Mini satellites into a roughly 160-mile-high orbit about an hour after liftoff, pushing the constellation’s working-satellite count up to around 10,865 [2].
A 24-satellite batch is fairly typical these days. What Is the Starlink Constellation Size, and How Big Can It Get?
The current Starlink constellation size is still well short of what SpaceX is actually allowed to build. In January 2026, the FCC approved a second batch of 7,500 Starlink Gen2 satellites, bringing SpaceX’s total authorized Gen2 fleet to 15,000 spacecraft [3]. That FCC Starlink approval also cleared SpaceX to operate its upgraded Gen2 satellites across additional frequency bands and gave the company more flexibility to deliver direct-to-cell and higher-capacity broadband service.
SpaceX doesn’t have to hit that ceiling overnight, though. The FCC’s order requires the company to deploy half of the newly authorized satellites by December 2028 and the rest by December 2031. Even so, it signals that today’s 10,865 working satellites are roughly two-thirds of where the constellation is headed over the next several years, not its final size.

How Does the Satellite Count Affect Your Starlink Service?
The number of Starlink working satellites, not the total ever launched, is what actually shapes your satellite internet experience. More operational satellites in a given coverage area mean more network capacity to go around, which generally translates into faster speeds and lower latency for existing subscribers… and more room for SpaceX to sign up new ones.
That matters because Starlink’s customer base has grown fast. The service surpassed 10 million active subscribers worldwide in early 2026 and reported more than 10.3 million subscribers in its first-quarter 2026 results [4].
