The short answer is yes, you can almost always use your own router with fiber internet. The catch is that “yes" looks a little different depending on your provider. Fiber does not work like the old cable setup where you could swap in any modem and be done. With fiber, your provider hands you a gateway, and to run your own router you have to tell that gateway to step aside.
If you’re reading this, you probably want more control than the rented box gives you. Maybe you want to run a VPN server, tame bufferbloat with smart queue management, host your own DNS, or you simply trust your own hardware more than a device the ISP can push updates to whenever it likes. Those are all good reasons. Let’s walk through exactly how to do it on the major fiber networks so you don’t have to dig through forum threads at midnight.

Most of the confusion comes down to two terms that sound interchangeable but aren’t. Both do the same job in the end: passing your real public IP address to your router and taking the provider’s box out of the routing business. They just go about it differently, and not every gateway offers both.
Bridge mode fully shuts down the gateway’s brain. Its routing, NAT (the system that shares one public IP across your devices), firewall, and WiFi all switch off. The gateway becomes a plain pass-through, doing nothing but handing the raw connection to your router. Your router then takes over every job on the network. This is the cleanest setup because only one device does the routing, avoiding the dreaded “double NAT" problem that trips up gaming, VPNs, and port forwarding.
IP passthrough keeps the gateway powered on and technically still running, but tells it to forward the public IP and all incoming traffic to one device you choose: your router. Under the hood, the gateway’s NAT table is still tracking traffic, so it is not a true bridge. In practice, this rarely causes problems for home users. On some gateways, this same feature shows up under names like DMZ or DMZplus, so if you don’t see “IP passthrough" in the menu, look for those.
Your ONT (the little box that converts the fiber light signal into an Ethernet signal) always stays in the chain. You are never bypassing that. You are only changing what the gateway does after the ONT.

Quick reference guide
Menus and model numbers shift over time, so treat this as your starting map rather than gospel.
AT&T doesn’t offer true bridge mode. Its gateways use IP passthrough instead. The important quirk with AT&T is that you cannot unplug or remove the gateway. It handles the security handshake that authenticates you to AT&T’s network, so it has to stay in the chain and stay powered on, even when your router does all the work.
After the reboot, your router should pull AT&T’s public IP on its WAN interface. If it briefly grabs a private address first, give it a few minutes to renew; this is normal behavior on the BGW320.
Frontier is the most model-dependent of the group. Some Frontier gateways support a transparent bridge mode. Others only offer IP passthrough. First, find out which box you have, then match the steps to it.
Heads up: on several Frontier models, once you enable bridge mode, you may lose the ability to log back into the gateway wirelessly. Before you flip the switch, note down how to reach it again (usually a wired connection to a LAN port), because a factory reset is sometimes the only way back in.
Quantum Fiber supports a transparent bridge mode on its C-series gateways. This is a cleaner experience than AT&T’s, but it can be a little more technical to set up.
Two notes. Quantum’s C4000, C3000, and C3510 gateways cannot run in access point mode, so bridge mode is your path if you want your own router in charge. And if you have the C5500XK SmartNID, be patient. Transparent mode on that unit has a reputation for being finicky, and a botched attempt can leave you with a blinking light and a support call to get reactivated.
Brightspeed inherited much of its network and equipment from CenturyLink, so if you have used Quantum Fiber or old CenturyLink service, the menus will feel familiar. Brightspeed openly allows third-party routers, though it will not troubleshoot your equipment for you.
Because Brightspeed will not support the WiFi or Ethernet function on gear you bring yourself, and it can only verify speed to its own modem, keep the provider gateway on hand in case you ever need to prove a speed problem is on their end.

You have to keep the provider’s gateway physically connected on every major fiber network, because it handles authentication and, in AT&T’s case, must stay powered on at all times. You are not required to let it run your network. Bridge mode or IP passthrough lets your router handle routing, WiFi, and security while the provider box fades into the background.
Not on its own. Your plan speed is your plan speed, and bridge mode will not push you past it. A good router can make that speed feel better: less lag under load, stronger WiFi coverage, and features like smart queue management that the rented gateway may not offer. Make sure your router’s WAN port can keep up, though. A 2 Gig plan needs at least a 2.5G port, and a 5 Gig plan really wants a 10G port to hit full speed on a wired connection.
